The Kerr Glass Manufacturing Co. was founded in 1904 in Portland, OR. Although not truly a manufacturer at its inception, Kerr offered the “Economy” brand of canning jars, which were produced for them by the Illinois-Pacific Glass Co.
The name Kerr first appeared on a canning jar in 1915 as “Kerr Economy.” Later, the “Economy” was dropped, and the name Kerr, along with “Self Sealing,” was prominently displayed as “Kerr Self Sealing Trademark Reg.” “Self Sealing” was first trademarked by Kerr in 1934, but the term had been used by Kerr as early as 1904.
Since then, Kerr has become the most well-known American canning jar brand alongside Ball and is one of the few canning jar brands still in production after over a century. In 1992, the Kerr glass factories, along with the rights to the Kerr trademark, were acquired by Ball Corporation, which later spun off its canning jar business to Jarden Home Brands, which includes the Ball, Kerr, Bernardin, and Golden Harvest brands.
